It’s Hammer Time!

Posted by Michael Rogers on August 2nd, 2011

Mike Hammer, that is. Mystery hounds know that none other than Max Allan Collins has polished a few of Mickey Spillane’s unfinished Mike Hammer stories (Max is the executor of Mickey’s literary estate). Well he’s come across three additional Hammer’s and will release them over the coming years. The first novel, Lady, Go Die! is set to roll out in hardcover in May 2012, with the second, Complex 90, following in May 2013, and King of the Weeds coming last in May 2014. All of the titles will be released by Titan Books.

In the press release announcing the books, Collins says that “Mickey Spillane has been a huge part of my private and professional life since childhood. He was the role model that led me into mystery writing. We became friends in the early 1980s…. Over the years, Mickey entrusted me with numerous unpublished manuscripts, including two half-completed Mike Hammer novels. Shortly before his death, he said to his wife, Jane, ‘When I’m gone, it will be a treasure hunt around here. Call Max—he’ll know what to do with what you find.’ ”

I’m looking forward to these. I’m reading Spillane/Collins’s The Consummata right now, and it’s a blast (Hard Case Crime will release it in October). Go Max!
