There are libraries that lend toys and those that lend tools, but fishing gear?Yes, the public libraries in Coventry, Lincoln, and Scituate, RI, lend a range of fishing equipment, including rods, reels, hooks, lures, and sinkers, the Providence Journal reported.
“They get used by parents and grandparents whose kids want to try the sport, but don’t want to invest the money in equipment,” Lynn Blanchette, director of the Coventry Public Library, explained. The borrowing period is the same as an express book—just a week, with no renewals.
The equipment has been provided by the Rhode Island Saltwater Anglers Association, a nonprofit organization, for a decade. However. Lending has declined, as fewer people are interested in fishing and equipment is more affordable. And why haven’t more libraries joined the program? Fear of worms, fish smells, and liability issues.
