Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Now Seeking Volunteers for What Used To Be Jobs

July 22nd, 2010

It’s hardly surprising for small libraries to use volunteers as pages or circulation clerks, but when large libraries with once-robust budgets are recruiting volunteers to do the work of what was once (at least in part) the work of staff members, things are changing.

From the Charlotte Mecklenberg Library, NC, which has been notably slammed by budget cuts:

Our #1 need is for “Circulation Assistants” who can consistently donate two or more hours a week for a 6 month commitment. If you are 14 and older, can sort and shelve materials and believe libraries are important to communities we would like you to join our team! Check out the full job description and complete a volunteer application today.

The library is also seeking Technical Assistants to help signing up patrons for computer usage and assist staff with computer classes; Materials Processing Volunteer Assistants to help with preparation and processing of new library materials and placement of RFID tags; and Technology Tutors to work one-on-one with adult patrons.
