In early May, I reported for LJ that Google Editions, the search giant’s “cloud bookstore” of titles available on any device, is slated to go live in June or July, posing an enormous challenge to existing digital bookselling models.
The Wall Street Journal was at the same symposium, and reported the same prediction. So did Publishers Weekly.
But we’re well into August, and no Google Editions just yet. According to the Independent, the goal is now summer’s end. (After all, Google Editions has been pushed back for years.) And Google Editions will not be alone, as platforms such as Blio and Copia (LJ coverage) are on their way soon.
Btw, here’s one writer who thinks Amazon, with its Kindle, has an unbeatable head start. I’m not so sure.
