What Else Is Hot? Romance

December 16th, 2010

The romance genre is so huge that trying to offer a prepub overview of spring titles is a little like trying to lasso the ocean. So I opted to focus on fresh starts; this features debuting authors and new series. There’s a range here from rough Scottish warriors to perky contemporary couples, but it’s instructive to note that among the 67 entries (including series), fully a third are paranormals. Because Harlequin dominates this genre, I’ve given it a section of its own to close out the list.

DEBUT AUTHORS
Ayers, Sidney. Beauty School Demon. Sourcebooks Casablanca. Jun. 2011. ISBN 9781402251740. pap. $6.99.
When fierce demonic activity arises from beautiful half-succubus Lucy Gregory’s antique chest in a suburban beauty salon, darkly brooding demon Rafe must get things under control. Including his emotions. The next title in the series comes in November.

Bowen, Rhonda. Man Enough for Me. Dafina: Kensington. Mar. 2011. ISBN 9780758259561. pap. $14.
Single young African Americans wrestle with life, love, and relationships in this series opener.

Clenney, Anita. Awaken the Highland Warrior. Sourcebooks Casablanca. May 2001. ISBN 9781402251238. pap. $6.99.
Historian Bree Kirkland inadvertently awakens an ancient Scottish warrior who’s been asleep in her backyard for 150 years. He thinks she might be a demon, but they’re both in trouble. This trilogy wraps with titles in November and Spring 2012.

Douglas, Kristina. Raziel. Pocket. Jan. 2011. ISBN 9781439191927. pap. $7.99.
Heroine Allie Watson launches fledgling author Douglas’s “The Fallen” series by stepping in front of a bus—and waking up in a strange place surrounded by fallen angels (note the black wings) who like blood. Why did Raziel save her against orders?

Dreiling, Vicky. How To Marry a Duke. Forever: Grand Central. Jan. 2011. ISBN 9780446565370. pap. $7.99.
Tristan, the Duke of Shelbourne, simply wants a wife, but the matchmaker he hires intends to find him true love. In a witty op-ed piece, “Vicky’s Guide To Writing and Publishing a Novel the Accidental Way,” the author explains that she was aiming to write a Regency-era version of The Bachelor.

Duncan, J.N. Deadworld. Kensington. Apr. 2011. ISBN 9780758255662. pap. $6.99.
Hardnosed FBI agent Jackie Rutledge wants to check out a serial killer, but her psychic partner warns her that the spirit world is involved. And the prime suspect is a PI who turns out to be…a vampire.

Duvall, Dianne. Darkness Dawns. Zebra: Kensington. Feb. 2011. ISBN 9781420118612. pap. $6.99.
Sarah helps a wounded stranger and finds herself in the midst of a longstanding war between vampires and immortals with a nasty taste for blood. “I’ll love you forever” really means something in the world of where this series opener is set.

Evans, Bronwen. Invitation To Ruin. Brava: Kensington. Mar. 2011. ISBN 9780758259196. pap. $14.
A Regency-set historical with England as backdrop, this debut stars a good girl who sets out to seduce her bad-boy husband.

George, Lexi. Demon Hunting in Dixie. Brava: Kensington. May 2011. ISBN 9780758263094. pap. $14.
Demon hunting in Alabama, to be exact. George’s series opener aims for humor.

Grant, Teresa. Vienna Waltz. Kensington. Apr. 2011. ISBN 9780758254238. pap. $15.
The setting is the Austrian capital, as the title suggests, and the time is at the close of the Napoleonic Empire, as characters collide in a whirl of lust and ambition.

Harper, Dani. Changeling Moon. Brava: Kensington. Jun. 2011. ISBN 978-0758265142. pap. $14.
Something different in the paranormal world: this series opener features shapeshifters. Lots of action (inevitable, when you’re changing shape, I would guess) and hot sex.

Hart, Regina. Fast Break. Dafina: Kensington. Jun. 2011. ISBN 9780758258816. pap. $6.99.
Here’s a series opener from a new author that blends sports and basketball.

Hogan, Tamara. Taste Me. Sourcebooks Casablanca. Mar. 2011. ISBN 9781402246012. pap. $6.99.
Hogan starts off with a sexy urban fantasy romance series that assumes incubi, sirens, valkyries, vampires, and werewolves are among us. Here, incubus security guru Lukas Sebastiani has his hands full protecting rock star Scarlett Fontaine. Look for follow-ups next year.

Irons, Katherine. Seaborne. Brava: Kensington. Apr. 2011. ISBN 9780758261403. pap. $14.
Here is probably the only romance you will ever encounter set in the lost city of Atlantis. Paranormal keeps pushing the envelope.

Jayne, Hannah. Under Wraps: The Underworld Detection Agency Chronicles. Kensington. Mar. 2011. ISBN 9780758258922. pap. $6.99.
Lucky Sophie Lawson: she has a vampire roommate, a werewolf boss, and a desk job tracking the undead. Urban fantasy at its wackiest; series opener.

McMorris, Kristina. Letters from Home. Kensington. Mar. 2011. ISBN 9780758246844. pap. $15.
It’s World War II, and three female friends find both love and heartbreak through the letters they write.

Marlowe, Mia. Touch of a Thief. Brava: Kensington. May 2011. ISBN 9780758263520. pap. $14.
This historical debut, which is set in England, is reputedly hot, heavy, and swiftly paced.

Ramsay, Hope. Welcome to Last Chance. Forever Romance: Grand Central. Mar. 2011. ISBN 9780446576093.
With her Nashville dreams up in smoke and bad guys on her trail, Jane has to go somewhere, so she hops a bus and picks the little town of Last Chance as her destination. There she encounters Clay, who’s also on the run from his dreams.

Sloane launches her romance career with this “Regency Rogues” trilogy, featuring aristocratic young men, associated with an elite group of government spies called the Young Corinthians, who become entangled with striking but unlikely young woman and…you know the rest! Tidbit: back when, Sloane was one of the first employees of a little Internet startup called…Amazon.

Zanetti, Rebecca. Fated. Brava. Kensington. Mar. 2011. ISBN 978-0758259233. pap. $14.
As a species, vampires are nearly extinct—and only one woman can save them. How’s that for reason for romance!
