Karen and I are both expecting bundles of joy shortly (me, very shortly, in fact), which made me decide to put together a list of some fun Mommy reads.
In Katherine Center’s The Bright Side of Disaster, Jenny finds herself raising a baby alone after her deadbeat boyfriend has a panic attack and skips town the day before she’s due. Jenny manages thanks to her feisty mother, stalwart best friend, and a very cute neighbor. But what happens when her contrite boyfriend appears on her doorstep months later? A charming novel featuring realistic characters and laugh-out-loud situations.
Amy Scheibe’s What Do You Do All Day? is the story of Jennifer, a former antiques expert for Christies, who now spends her days raising five-year-old Georgia and baby Max. She’s having a hard time preserving her identity, so when her husband leaves for a three-month trip to Singapore, she decides to seek out other stay-at-home moms. Think Sex and the City crossed with Parents Magazine.
Sarah Bilston’s got 2 Mommy books – in Bed Rest, lawyer Quinn flounders when all of a sudden she is put on bed rest for the last three months of her pregnancy. Her formerly busy, organized life comes to a screeching halt. When she makes friends with the neighbors, she finds a new purpose doing some pro bono work for the residents of the building next door. Followed up by Sleepless Nights, where we find Quinn totally thrown off her game by a new baby, not to mention her husband’s impending layoff.
In Jane Green’s Babyville, three friends cope with impending motherhood. Julia struggles to conceive, but her boyfriend could care less. Maeve becomes unexpectedly (and scandalously) pregnant; and Samantha’s postpartum depression takes a toll on her marriage.
