Continuing my 80s theme from last week…
Set in a wealthy Michigan suburb in the 1980s, Sarah Grace McCandless’ Grosse Pointe Girl: Tales from a Suburban Adolescence, follows Emma from the summer before sixth grade to her high school graduation. Emma goes through typical adolescent rites of passage, such as getting her first bra, being bullied by the popular girls, experiencing unrequited love, getting fake IDs, and adjusting to her parents’ separation. Told as episodic reflections in the first person, this is a quick and enjoyable read that will appeal to anyone who grew up in the era of Madonna and Michael Jackson – and will possibly even appeal to YA readers.
