Dusty Book: The Love Letter by Cathleen Schine

August 24th, 2010

The Love Letter is one of those books that make you envy those who are about to read it for the first time. When 40ish Helen MacFarquhar receives a love letter bookended “Dear Goat” and “As Ever, Ram” she assumes it got slipped into her mail by mistake. But soon every customer in her resort-town bookshop is a potential secret admirer. And what about the strapping college student working with her for the summer? Could he be capable of such unrequited passion? As the summer progresses and Helen’s daughter returns from camp and her over-the-top mother and grandmother come to town, Helen’s life becomes a near farce of secrets, misunderstandings, and Shakespearian twists. A smart summer romp.

Took me a moment to realize I’d read this a while back and only remembered the beautiful cover. I hate when that happens. But I know I liked it a lot at the time. Sometimes a book is so undemanding it passes under the radar of memory. Especially when you’re an old coot like me. :)
